Meyboom
Take a gang of likely lads, the Brotherhood of Saint-Laurent's Companions, preferably with a dash of the local accent. Add some background music with the Meyboom fanfare and mix in 7 giants to spice things up. Select the carriers and pick a beech tree, preferably young and tender. Present the tree to the good people of Brussels and then take everything along down the rue des Sables, but without dragging your heels too much, as after 5 o clock if the tree is not planted it will all have been in vain and a curse will hang over the city. That basically sums up this traditional custom which goes back a few years, to say the least. In fact, it will be held for the 700th time on the 9th of August of this year.

La Saint Verhaeghen
If there is one date that all the students of Brussels never fail to make a note of in their diary, then it must be the 20th of November. Every year, on this date, once they have settled into university life, the students come together for St-V, an opportunity to celebrate Saint-Verhaegen, founder of the Free University of Brussels and to show their attachment to the University and its philosophical principles. Not so very long ago, the parade marched through the streets of Brussels in a shower of eggs and flour. They have now been banned in an attempt to “clean up the act”. Despite this concession, the crazy atmosphere has not waned on and around the numerous floats of the clubs and regional branches of the ULB and of the VUB. St-V is also a good excuse for students to drink for free all day long at the float of their choice in exchange for a modest sum. From the Sablon, the parade finishes its crawl at the Bourse. In the evening, a marquee awaits those who are still on their feet on the Campus de la Plaine of the ULB.
