Francis Alÿs
| |
|
| This Belgian artist lives and works in Mexico City. For the first time in Belgium, a big one-man exhibition will be dedicated to
him. It will include paintings, interventions in the city or performances which testify to the subversive character of this artist,
better known for his poetic works. His work consists of actions which question society and the position of art within it. The
exhibition is jointly produced in cooperation with the Tate Modern of London and the MOMA of New York. |

Skoda Jazz Festival
| |
|
| Blues, free or rock: every tendency in international jazz playing their best compositions in the capital’s finest concert halls. The leading lights of world jazz and virtually unknown quintets have just one aim: to take the blue note to its limits, accompanying it with all the others, of course. An extensive programme and promising line-ups that should be consulted as soon as they are published. Reserve as soon as you can, because it is not unusual for demand to outstrip supply! |

Nuit Blanche
| |
|
| Nuit Blanche (which means “sleepless night” or “white night” in French), is a cultural event that is both artistic and popular. This 8th edition of the event aims at (re)discovering or (re)conquering this urban environment from a new perspective.
It is a night to get together, to share unusual and creative aspects of the contemporary creative scene in a warm and festive atmosphere that encourages discovery and wonder.
Nuit Blanche is aimed at opening up the city to the world of the night, by encouraging access to numerous places for a wide audience. This approach really is open to the city, to its inhabitants and to creativity.

James Ensor
| |
|
| In 2010, the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Brussels’ centre for fine arts) plans to take a fresh look at the work of James Ensor. A prolific
artist, brilliant creative mind and complex soul, fascinated by light and death, inspired by Breughel and Bosch, “the Prince of painters”,
as he was called at the end of his life, will be seen in a new light. This exhibition, designed by key figures from the art world, will
be the climax of a series of exhibitions organised both in Belgium and abroad from the end of 2008. The extraordinary scale of this
project is also thanks to the close scientific cooperation with Belgian museums and the promotion of their collections. |

Wim Delvoye. Knockin’ on Heaven’s door
| |
|
| Invited to the Peggy Guggenheim as part of the 2009 Venice Biennial, the Belgian visual artist Wim Delvoye is one of the key international
figures of contemporary art. Following the usual emblazoned objects, the Cloaca faecal machine, the tattooed pigs and
other works symbolising an approach that mixes genres, cultures and practices, today he seizes on the Gothic and metamorphosis.
Drawings of monumental cathedrals, distorted depictions of Christ, lewd stained-glass windows and Corten steel towers are part
of the integration of religious elements. |

Lucas Cranach and his time
| |
|
| These days, Lucas Cranach is considered as one of the greatest painters of the 16th century. This exhibition – the first ever dedicated to the artist in a Benelux country - places the work of this prominent figure from the German Renaissance back into the social, cultural and artistic context of his era. Cranach was very involved in the cultural and religious life of his time. As a court painter, he often had the opportunity to brush shoulders with the great figures of his time, such as Martin Luther. Discover the authenticity and originality of his paintings, sketches and engravings, his studio work but also the close bonds that tied him to his German, Italian and Dutch contemporaries. You are hereby invited to embark on a journey through Europe and through time. |

Orientalism
| |
|
| The exhibition presents European Oriental art from the late 18th to the early 20th century. Journey through the favourite
themes of the artists of this movement. Desert-like or lush, green landscapes, female figures now glimpsed, now gazed at, as
well as interiors with countless colourful details captured the attention of the artists and reflect the Western perception of the
East. Down through the centuries, this vision was fed by contacts and trade, while developing a persistent imagination. |

FIGHTING THE BOX
20 Belgian designers - 20 stories
| |
|
| 20 designers have agreed to play the game to unveil the mysterious ways and the pitfalls that lead from the creative idea to the finished object; that design object that has to be produced industrially for the comfort of all. This language oscillates between art and technology and is a constant, sometimes tense, dialogue between the designer and the constraints of it’s industrial production. This fascinating story is a permanent “battle” we are honoured to invite you to discover. |

Asia – Europe : Faith and Trade
| |
|
| More than any other continent, Asia has from time immemorial exercised a strange fascination over Europe; it goes without saying that this was marked by elevations of spirituality and wisdom, but also by more prosaic treasures in the form of spices, perfumes, teas and precious stones. Introduced by the Romans and abundantly exploited by Marco Polo, the “Silk Route” has long symbolised the extraordinary commercial and political network that exists between the East and the West. These exchanges also opened the way for most of the main religious and philosophical trends, inexhaustible sources of inspiration for culture and the arts. An exhibition fringe event of the 2010 ASEM (Asia- Europe Meeting) summit. |
