Death in the Middle Ages
| |
|
| Whatever his origin or social status, man has always concerned himself with his fate in the hereafter. These questions relating
to death and the beliefs that go with it have, of course, changed considerably over the centuries. Nowadays, illness and death
may be considered taboo, but this was not always so. In the Middle Ages, for example, death really was part of everyday life.
This exhibition provides a very broad overview of 1000 years of death in the Middle Ages, through funeral rituals, beliefs,
mourning and memory. The attitude of medieval man towards death, depending on his rank and social status, forms the unifying
thread of the exhibition. |

Cimatics
Brussels International Festival for Live Audiovisual Arts & Vj'ing
| |
|
| For this 8th edition of the Cimatics festival, we try to go at full throttle again with todays image culture. As an audiovisual festival Cimatics puts the focus both on art, media, design and music. We invite you for a mix of concerts, film-screenings, exhibitions, workshops, conferences, public interventions and parties.
Cimatics is spread out all over the city of Brussels. For 10 days and nights it will be hosted by numerous venues, both underground and above. It intends to be a citywide international festival for advanced creativity, a node where underground, pop and art become mixed in an exciting cultural mash-up.
Cimatics is an ongoing experiment. What was initially a festival for VJing, and soon after for live audiovisual art, has now become an exercise and celebration focusing on 'advanced creativity'. Todays urban and digital culture in all its diversity.

Nocturnes du Sablon
| |
|
| Illuminations, gentle music and doors opened with a smile everywhere: at the end of November, the Sablon will be like a reincarnation of Merlin the Magician. The art galleries and antique shops will inaugurate their year-end displays, highlighting their most magnificent pieces, in a flattering and glowing light. The taverns and restaurants will welcome customers with even more cheer. And if perchance you want to venture further afield, the association "Sablon, quartier des arts et du commerce" will be glad to supply comfortable carriages with coachmen in period costume.

Francis Alÿs
| |
|
| This Belgian artist lives and works in Mexico City. For the first time in Belgium, a big one-man exhibition will be dedicated to
him. It will include paintings, interventions in the city or performances which testify to the subversive character of this artist,
better known for his poetic works. His work consists of actions which question society and the position of art within it. The
exhibition is jointly produced in cooperation with the Tate Modern of London and the MOMA of New York. |

James Ensor
| |
|
| In 2010, the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Brussels’ centre for fine arts) plans to take a fresh look at the work of James Ensor. A prolific
artist, brilliant creative mind and complex soul, fascinated by light and death, inspired by Breughel and Bosch, “the Prince of painters”,
as he was called at the end of his life, will be seen in a new light. This exhibition, designed by key figures from the art world, will
be the climax of a series of exhibitions organised both in Belgium and abroad from the end of 2008. The extraordinary scale of this
project is also thanks to the close scientific cooperation with Belgian museums and the promotion of their collections. |

Wim Delvoye. Knockin’ on Heaven’s door
| |
|
| Invited to the Peggy Guggenheim as part of the 2009 Venice Biennial, the Belgian visual artist Wim Delvoye is one of the key international
figures of contemporary art. Following the usual emblazoned objects, the Cloaca faecal machine, the tattooed pigs and
other works symbolising an approach that mixes genres, cultures and practices, today he seizes on the Gothic and metamorphosis.
Drawings of monumental cathedrals, distorted depictions of Christ, lewd stained-glass windows and Corten steel towers are part
of the integration of religious elements. |

Lucas Cranach and his time
| |
|
| These days, Lucas Cranach is considered as one of the greatest painters of the 16th century. This exhibition – the first ever dedicated to the artist in a Benelux country - places the work of this prominent figure from the German Renaissance back into the social, cultural and artistic context of his era. Cranach was very involved in the cultural and religious life of his time. As a court painter, he often had the opportunity to brush shoulders with the great figures of his time, such as Martin Luther. Discover the authenticity and originality of his paintings, sketches and engravings, his studio work but also the close bonds that tied him to his German, Italian and Dutch contemporaries. You are hereby invited to embark on a journey through Europe and through time. |

Orientalism
| |
|
| The exhibition presents European Oriental art from the late 18th to the early 20th century. Journey through the favourite
themes of the artists of this movement. Desert-like or lush, green landscapes, female figures now glimpsed, now gazed at, as
well as interiors with countless colourful details captured the attention of the artists and reflect the Western perception of the
East. Down through the centuries, this vision was fed by contacts and trade, while developing a persistent imagination. |
