Happening on the Grand Place
| |
|
| Every two years, this provides a different surprise. The master horticulturalists of Ghent enhance the gorgeous setting of the Grand-Place with drawings and sophisticated patterns, whose designs are kept secret until they are finally implemented. By the truckload, 700,000 begonias go to make up this colourful, glowing yet short-lived fresco. These ornamental flowers, which originate from the Caribbean, once cut, can withstand changes in temperature and the beating sun. Their fabulous composition can be admired from all the taverns surrounding the Grand-Place, as well as from the balcony of the Town Hall, which overlooks it directly. |

The Van Damme memorial is therefore part of the athletic festivities of the summer and is becoming one of the long-awaited events of the Golden League. And so the memorial attracts the great names of the stadium for them to set records with their best performances at the 6 meetings and share the famous ‘jackpot’, which reached a value of 1 million dollars last year! Fireworks displays and concerts give the stadium a very special, welcoming and enthusiastic atmosphere. |

Marcel Broodthaers
| |
|
| The time has come to honour again one of the greatest Belgian artists of the 20th century. Marcel Broodthaers, the king of heteroclite assemblies with the most unexpected aesthetical features, loved to create works with objects from everyday life: bricks, eggshells, sponges, plaster, newspapers, etc.
This exhibition features works by Marcel Broodthaers from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the largest public collection of Broodthaers’ works. It is the very first time that they will be shown all together. This rich ensemble is completed by a number of pieces from other museums and private collections. More than enough good reasons to re-discover this visionary, anti-authority artist, whose works are still as topical as ever.

Charles Van der Stappen
| |
|
| Marking the one hundredth anniversary of the death of sculptor Charles Van der Stappen, there will be an exhibition presenting
the many different aspects of his work. From the study of antiques and of 15th-century Italy to the naturalism of his era, the
Belgian artist was a Jack-of-all-trades. He also owes his fame to orders for monuments and decorative sculptures on facades
and to his innovative style of teaching. We are indebted to him, along with Constantin Meunier, for the sculptures of the Botanic
Garden of Brussels. He also worked together with the architect Victor Horta in the field of Art nouveau. His studio was a
popular meeting-place for artists of different disciplines. You can also see a selection of drawings, preparatory sketches, plans
and archive documents. |

Visit of the Royal Palace
| |
|
| During the year, the official activities of the royal family take place in the palace in Brussels, which is in pure Louis XVI style. After the national holiday, it opens to the public for nearly two months. The monumental staircases and the state rooms are the subject of special attention, especially since the recent installations commissioned by Queen Paola from well-known modern artists. The new ceiling of the hall of mirrors alone deserves special attention: its designer Jan Fabre, has decorated it with magical reflections, consisting of one and a half million elytrons of Thai scarab beetles. |

FIGHTING THE BOX
20 Belgian designers - 20 stories
| |
|
| 20 designers have agreed to play the game to unveil the mysterious ways and the pitfalls that lead from the creative idea to the finished object; that design object that has to be produced industrially for the comfort of all. This language oscillates between art and technology and is a constant, sometimes tense, dialogue between the designer and the constraints of it’s industrial production. This fascinating story is a permanent “battle” we are honoured to invite you to discover. |

Sacred Kings in Africa
| |
|
| As the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence, a cultural event of great scope brings to light the special relationship between this country and Belgium. An exhibition at the Centre for Fine Arts - in collaboration with the Royal Museum for Central Africa – gathers masterpieces of Congolese and Central African heritage that all show a close interrelation with power. This special relationship allows a fresh look at these works of art, at their role at the heart of African society and across several eras. This idea is continued in the launch of an important publication on current issues regarding art and museums in Africa. The exhibition will then travel to several big African cities. |

The workshop of Franquin and Cie
| |
|
| From the immediate post-war years to the late fifties, comic strip went through an exceptionally creative period around a cheerful group
of storytellers, each more talented than the last. Their names were Jijé, Franquin, Morris, Will, Delporte, Peyo, Roba and Macherot.
Their genius was to create some of the most original and exuberant works of European comic strip: Lucky Luke, Johan and Pirlouit,
the world of Spirou and Fantasio, the Marsupilami, Boule and Bill, Chlorophylle, the Schtroumpfs and many more! Happily working
as a studio, they had no hesitation in supporting each other, found time to laugh and even to dabble in painting to great effect. In the
midst of an outstanding collection of original documents, displaying sketches and paintings, the Studio of Franquin and Co recreates
that setting of imagination and inventiveness that gave rise to so much enchantment. |

Asia – Europe : Faith and Trade
| |
|
| More than any other continent, Asia has from time immemorial exercised a strange fascination over Europe; it goes without saying that this was marked by elevations of spirituality and wisdom, but also by more prosaic treasures in the form of spices, perfumes, teas and precious stones. Introduced by the Romans and abundantly exploited by Marco Polo, the “Silk Route” has long symbolised the extraordinary commercial and political network that exists between the East and the West. These exchanges also opened the way for most of the main religious and philosophical trends, inexhaustible sources of inspiration for culture and the arts. An exhibition fringe event of the 2010 ASEM (Asia- Europe Meeting) summit. |

Congo River
| |
|
| In connection with the International Year of Biodiversity, the Museum is organizing in 2010 an interactive exhibition featuring the great Congo River.
A spellbinding river over 4,500 kilometres long and up to 30 kilometres wide, flowing silent and calm across plains or roaring furiously through rapids and waterfalls, it’s Central Africa’s main artery, the source of extraordinary biological, geographical and cultural diversity.
The exhibition will follow the Congo from source to mouth through equatorial forest, using a multidisciplinary approach based on RMCA collections and research.

Paris - Brussels
| |
|
| This Paris-Brussels exhibition lifts the curtain on the often unsuspected wealth of Franco-Belgian exchanges. It starts at the time when Belgium was French and when Belgian architects, trained in Paris, won the big prize of Rome. Down the years, we come across Viollet-le-Duc at the Porte de Hal, then the Parisian Guimard, the architect of the Paris metro stations, who found his style by visiting the Horta houses : we see Henry van de Velde unveiling the first plans for the famous theatre of the Champs-Elysées, Antoine Courtens become a master of Art Deco after rubbing shoulders with the Parisian creators and Henry Lacoste build an artistic bridge between the school of fine arts of Paris and the Brussels academy. Hundreds of original documents illustrate two centuries of these burgeoning architectural relations between the two capitals. |

I Medici: A renaissance in paper by Isabelle de Borchgrave
| |
|
| For some 15 years Isabelle's paper exhibitions have travelled the world. Everywhere, from New York to Tokyo passing through Venice and Istambul, the magic produces its effect...causing wonderment at the transformation of a simple sheet of white paper. It is a meeting through the centuries with one of the most prestigious families in Italian history: the Medici. Through the magic of trompe l'oeil, Isabelle walks us through history and aesthetics. 29 paper costumes showing the elegance of the times in minute detail, and giving new life to the painting of the great masters such as Botticelli, Bronzino or Gozzoli.
